Why your pretty family planner won't give you extra time

"Is it in the calendar? 'Coz it's not happening if it isn't!"

That's the cry I hear amongst thousands of households across the world.

Our obsession with planners, schedulers and diaries has reached epidemic proportions (pardon the pun) as the number of tasks increase with every passing year.

How else would we be able to remember all of the activities, chores, appointments and duties that we have to perform as parents?

They're such great tools to stay on top of the never-ending to-do-lists and make sure we don't drop the ball (too much).

I've been married to my paper-calendar-of-beaches-stuck-by-the-fridge for many years. I'm not shy to admit I've been seduced by the online shared scheduler, flirted with cutesy diaries and even had an affair with a Kikki.K planner. But I've always come home to my trusted, boring old paper calendar.

But here's the problem.

These will NOT give you more time.

Yes, it will tell you when to do all the things, but you will still have all the things to do.

It's a bit like an eternal game of chess where nobody takes another piece, but instead you just move them around the board. Forever.

How many times have you run out of space on your calendar, or the 284th task has dropped off the end of your online diary?

I know, it feels so good to get everything out of our brains onto somewhere else, where we don't have to use up valuable head space trying to remember it all, doesn't it?

So don't panic, I'm not suggesting throwing away your calendar just yet! In fact, not at all (phew, you can breathe now).

The trick to making your planner, calendar or diary work for YOU, is to make sure that only the MOST important tasks get put on there.

After working with high performing teams over the last 20 years, with a gazillion things to do on my list, and crazy deadlines to do it in, I've become ruthless.

Getting rid of the things I don't NEED to do. Scrapping the things I don't WANT to do (unless it's going to make a difference to the end result, or I'll get royally told off by the Big Cheese if I don't do it).

It's like I'm the bouncer to an elite nightclub. I'll only let the best dressed tasks in the front door. The ones that really deserve my time.

The others won't even make it past the cloakroom. They'll crouch miserably on the pavement outside, eating soggy hot chips and waiting for Uber to take them home...
